10TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ENERGY FROM BIOMASS AND WASTE
HOTEL MONACO & GRAND CANAL, VENICE (IT) / 25-27 NOVEMBER 2024

2018 Edition

The seventh edition of the Venice Symposium - International Symposium on Energy from Biomass and Waste, organised by the International Waste Working Group (IWWG – www.iwwg.eu) with the technical support of Eurowaste Srl, was held from 15th to 18th October 2018 in Venice, Italy at the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista.

The conference was attended by over 400 delegates from 43 different countries, who took part in discussions relating the advances in the application of technologies for energy recovery from biomass and waste. The following sub-topics were discussed: combustion, anaerobic digestion, biomass to energy, alternative thermal treatments, strategies and policies, other waste-to-energy options. Particular attention was paid to the characteristics of combustible products generable from different approaches: SRF, biochar, biodiesel and other products suitable for a decentralized exploitation of the energy content of waste and biomass.

The programme was structured in 5 parallel tracks, for a total of 47 oral sessions during which over 200 presentations were delivered, and a poster session always accessible to delegates.

Four guided technical tours of real scale plants operating in the production of energy from biomass and waste both by means of thermal and biological processes have been arranged for the last day of conference:

  • Bio Treatment plant in Camposampiero / ETRA
  • Anaerobic Digestion plant in Bassano del Grappa / ETRA
  • Fusina thermal power plant / ENEL
  • Brescia Waste to Energy Plant / A2A

The high standard of the scientific sessions was accompanied by a captivating programme of social events that included: a treasure hunt around the Venetian calli, campielli and fondamenta that represented an unconventional way to learn how to wander around the fabulous labyrinth of Venice without getting lost; a fascinating excursion with a delicious dinner and musical entertainment on board a characteristic Venetian Galleon around Venice and its beautiful lagoon; and to conclude, a farewell cocktail party accompanied by smooth jazz melodies played by the University of Padova jazz band.
